District COVID-19
Updates / Information
Dear Adna Families, October 18, 2021
As a result of 28% of Middle/High School students absent and 19% of Elementary students absent we will be pivoting to remote learning for all students in the District beginning Tuesday, October 19, 2021. Currently 25% of AMHS staff are affected by quarantining requirements. The impact of Covid on our Certificated and Classified staff has made it difficult to find substitutes throughout Lewis County. Students will return to in-person learning on Friday, October 29, 2021.
It has been decided that remote learning is both responsible and necessary. With the number of students affected, it is our best option for the health and safety of our school as recommended by the Lewis County Department of Health. The ten(10) day time period will ensure that the buildings are thoroughly cleaned and reduce any possible further spread of Covid-19 throughout the District.
If you have any issues with internet service, you may park in the school parking lots to access the Adna District internet service. You may also request hard copies of any materials that you are unable to access.

Dear Adna Families,
This is not a personal notification. This message is an effort to inform you that we have learned on February 8th there was possible limited exposure at one of our school locations to a person that has tested positive for Covid-19. The individual was tested May 18th and received a positive result. Upon notification of the exposure the District notified Lewis County Department of Health and any individual directly impacted. If you have not been contacted by the Lewis County Department of Health or an Adna School District staff member, then you were not exposed. DSHS distributing P-EBT cards again for the 2020-21 school year
Chehalis, WA – The Washington Department of Social & Health Services (DSHS) is providing pandemic electronic benefit (P-EBT) cards again to eligible children for the 2020-21 school year. Children will receive P-EBT benefits if they are eligible for free or reduced-price school meals and their school is closed or has reduced in-person attendance hours. The monthly benefit ranges from $25 to $123 per child.
New P-EBT cards will be automatically mailed in the next few weeks to families who have already qualified for free and reduced lunches at their schools. The card will be mailed directly to each eligible child instead of benefits being loaded onto a family's existing SNAP/EBT card. Families can continue to apply for free and reduced lunches through the end of the 2020-21 school year.
P-EBT cards are eligible for purchasing affordable local produce and supporting local farmers at farmers’ markets that participate in the SNAP Market Match program. These cards can be used just like a SNAP/EBT card to purchase tokens at a farmers’ market. A family may swipe their SNAP/EBT card for benefits and a P-EBT card and can receive SNAP Market Match for both transactions depending on which market they attend and some have limits on match funds available. A family with multiple qualifying children can swipe each card and receive SNAP Market Match for each card.
Families who use P-EBT for qualifying purchases at Safeway stores are eligible to receive Complete Eats coupons which can be used to buy fresh fruits and vegetables during their next shopping trip:
https://www.doh.wa.gov/YouandYourFamily/NutritionandPhysicalActivity/HealthyEating/SNAPIncentives/FruitandVegetableCoupons
More information on the P-EBT card can be found at: https://www.dshs.wa.gov/esa/community-services-offices/pandemic-ebt-p-ebt. or call the P-EBT Contact Center at 833–518–0282 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday-Friday (except observed holidays).
If you have questions about SNAP Market Match transactions that involved P-EBT, please contact [email protected].

If You Gather: A Safety ChecklistThe safest choice this season is to not gather in person with people you don't live with. By making that choice, you will help control the spread of COVID-19. If you decide to gather with people from outside your household, there’s always a risk of spreading COVID-19 infection. The tips below may help lessen that risk, but there will still be risk.
And remember, before gathering, check the restriction requirements for your region.

COVID-19 vaccine distribution explained
by Rachel Wood, M.D., MPH, Lewis County Health Officer
In December we talked about how vaccines are developed and how the phased method of getting vaccine into people’s arms was determined. Some vaccines started being distributed locally last month. Let’s talk about how that distribution is happening, and how to find vaccine for yourself and your family.
Distributing vaccine is kind of like the classic story of the fire triad. It takes three things to make fire burn – heat, fuel, and oxygen. Take any one away and the fire goes out. Vaccine distribution needs four things – a provider, vaccine, staffing, and a point of dispensing (POD) site. If you are missing any one of the four, you can’t vaccinate people. Looking at each of the four individually, we have both challenges and successes happening.
Providers
The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) has required licensed vaccine providers to apply separately to be able to distribute the COVID-19 vaccines. As of this writing, many potential providers in Lewis County have applied for permission but not all have been approved. As more providers get approved, we build capacity to vaccinate more people as vaccine supplies increase. Some providers will plan to vaccinate their own staff and patients, only.
Vaccine
Many vaccines are under development, and to date two have been approved for use in the United States. Vaccine supplies are being distributed from the manufacturers to states. Federal
guidelines direct how much vaccine each state gets based on its overall population. Once Washington receives its quota of vaccine, DOH distributes it within the state. Unlike the federal total-population model, DOH uses a framework that prioritizes populations most vulnerable to COVID-19 complications, such as hospitalization and death, to determine how many doses go where. The demand for vaccines is higher than the current supply. There is not enough vaccine to go around right now. This will change. So far, just over 6,000 doses have arrived in Lewis County, where we have nearly 20,000 healthcare workers and residents over age 65 in Phase 1A and Phase 1B, Tier 1 alone.
Staffing
Staffing is a major bright spot, of course, because this is Lewis County. On Sunday, January 24, a COVID-19 vaccine drive-through POD vaccinated 1,253 people at the Southwest Washington Fairgrounds. About 100 volunteers helped make that happen, about one-third of them with only two days’ notice! With Lewis County Public Health & Social Services providing the organization, more than 60 Providence medical staff volunteered their day to provide shots. 35 or more volunteers from Lewis County United Way and Rotary filled all the non-medical support roles. Just like in the last floods, United Way has once again stepped up to organize volunteers for future PODs to come. Have some free time? Sign up at this link: http://bit.ly/LCUWVolunteer. Based on volunteers’ reactions from this first POD, you’ll be glad you did.
Point of Dispensing Sites
Here is another advantage we have here in Lewis County. We have already proved the fairgrounds can handle large drive-through PODs. Safeway partnered with Centralia Schools and vaccinated 500 people in one day. Your Health Department is partnering with United Way, Twin Transit, and Bird’s Eye Medical to develop mobile PODs to serve certain areas and populations. We also have many other potential mass vaccination sites around the county – i.e. schools, churches, grange halls, sports arenas, parking lots, and other large facilities. All it takes is some imagination and partnerships. Yes, and vaccine for providers.
Finding Vaccine
Each week more vaccine arrives in Lewis County – not enough to meet demand, but at least we keep some making progress. If you have internet access, go to the DOH Phase Finder website:
www.FindYourPhaseWa.org or www.EncuentraTuFaseWa.org for Spanish. If you are eligible, Phase Finder will give you a confirmation and show a list of locations where you can get vaccinated. Do not be surprised to find no openings at first.
If you are not yet eligible under the current phase, you will be able to leave your e-mail or phone number to receive a notice when your phase is eligible. If you do not have internet access, you can call 1-800-525-0127 between 8am and 5pm, press # and someone at DOH will assist you.
Phase Finder does not put you on a waiting list. Once eligible, you will have to check back until you can make a connection with an open vaccination slot.
The key message is . . . Patience!
A vaccination campaign of this magnitude has never been seen before and it will take time, cooperation and patience to reach everyone who wants COVID-19 vaccinations. In the meantime, until vaccines are available for everyone, we still have the means at our disposal to prevent getting sick – the 3 Ws: Wear a mask; Wash your hands; and Watch your distance.

Superintendent Letter to Families – Health Department Update
Dear Adna Families,
The District received notice from the Lewis County Health Department and Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) strongly recommending the closure of face to face instruction and the move to a full distance learning model to start the 2020-2021 school year. These recommendations essentially require us to begin school in a distance learning model. The Lewis County Health Departments decision is based on the increase in number of COVID-19 cases in our county. The District and School Board have weighed the situation and recommendations carefully. The District will follow the Health Department and OSPI guidelines. We want to make the best possible decision for the safety and learning of our students and staff.
While we are disappointed and saddened for our students, parents, staff and community that we cannot open with face to face instruction, we are committed to providing meaningful daily instruction and to provide the needed learning supports for our students.
Our current remote model:
We are hopeful that we will be able to return to face to face instruction quickly as the year progresses and will be proactive by re-assessing the situation every two weeks. You should receive a conference schedule in the mail by Friday, August 14th. Please contact your building principal for more information. Mr. Thad Nelson 360-748-8552 or Mrs. Lisa Dallas 360-748-7029.
Sincerely,
James Forrest, Supt.

6.26.20
Dear Parents,
First, let me thank you for your support and understanding as we, as a nation and community, responded to the unexpected invasion of COVID-19 in March. I am very proud of the way our ASD students, parents, employees, and community handled the unprecedented demands we were faced with to protect everyone as we continued to educate and feed our students during the most unusual of circumstances. As you know, there continues to be concerns and questions related to how schools plan to reopen. While we are in the business of educating, our first priority is the safety of our students and our employees. Be assured, we are working diligently on our Back to School Restart Plan. Our goal is bring students back to school face to face safely, beginning September 1st with alternate plans in place should the need arise. Any plan put into place will meet the requirements that have been set by Washington State Department of Health, Washington State Labor and Industries and Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction which include; daily health checks, face coverings and 6 foot physical distancing.
There have been a lot of questions concerning athletics in the fall, and as of yet, guidance from DOH, L&I and WIAA is still in early stages. Because we would like to plan for a traditional school year we have begun fall sports sign ups and are providing those athletes with the opportunity to participate in summer conditioning.
Any student athlete that plans on playing Football, Girls Soccer in the Fall, and missed the Parent/Player Meeting held on Thursday, June 24th, needs to contact Athletic Director K.C. Johnson, email [email protected].
Sign ups for cheer closes July 1st. Please contact cheer coach, Savannah Kohler at [email protected].
As we continue our Back to School Reopening process we will keep you updated. I encourage our parents to frequently visit our web page and follow our social media for up to date and accurate information.
Thank you for your continued positive support as we strive to do what is best for all of our students and employees during these challenging times.
Sincerely,
James L. Forrest

The individual was tested May 18th and received a positive result. Upon notification of the exposure the District notified Lewis County Department of Health and any individual directly impacted. If you have not been contacted by the Lewis County Department of Health or an Adna School District staff member, then you were not exposed. As we continue to work with and follow Lewis County Department of Health protocols we want to assure you that our buildings undergo thorough disinfecting practices multiple times per day and all buildings remain open.
Thank you for understanding that, due to medical privacy laws, we are not able to release name(s) of individuals with COVID-19. We will continue to communicate changes and updates to you. With your participation, we believe we are able to provide a safe learning environment for your child(s). However, we also want to remind parents that distanced learning is available to any student that would prefer that option.
The most important things you can do to help keep our schools safe and open:
· Make sure your child is wearing a mask.
· Make sure your child is washing their hands.
· Keep your child home if they are sick.

Before you gather
- Plan ahead. The safest option is to gather virtually with anyone you don't live with. If you decide to gather in person, get really clear with friends and family about how you will make safety a priority when spending time together. Set some ground rules that will help everyone know what to expect. View a sample conversation guide.
- Review your guest list. First, keep it small - less than five people you don't live with. Make sure you have room for everyone to stay six feet apart. Next, think about who you are inviting. Are there people who may be in a high risk category or children? Consider special needs and precautions as part of your planning. Remember, it's an act of caring to decide not to invite people who have a higher risk of getting very sick from COVID-19. Find other ways to connect virtually.
- Get creative. Think about safer ways to gather that don't involve sharing a meal. Bundle up and meet for a walk or other outdoor activity—remember to stay six feet (2m) apart.
- Spread out. Set up seating so that everyone can stay six feet (2m) apart at all times. Avoid gathering at a dining table.
- Keep it short. Gather for less than two hours. Shorter periods of time give COVID-19 less chance to spread, and will make it less likely that someone will need to use a restroom. Shorter gatherings also make it easier to keep hands and surfaces properly sanitized.
- Do a health check. Ask if anyone has had symptoms such as cough, fever or shortness of breath, in the last 2 weeks. Ask guests to check their temperature before arriving. Anyone with a fever—or who has had other symptoms, or knows they have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 within the last two weeks—should stay home.
- Consider the children. Kids have trouble playing six feet apart, so wearing masks and not sharing toys or food may be the safest plan of action. Remember: kids under 2 should never wear masks!
- Make a food plan. The safest option is to plan your gathering between meals. If you do offer a meal, separate food ahead of time into individual servings and avoid communal bowls and utensils. Find more tips about food prep in the FAQs.
- Get tested. Get a COVID-19 test to make sure you're negative. It may take a few days to receive your test results, and you should quarantine at home while waiting for them. If you test negative, you still need to wear a mask and keep your distance from others when you socialize.
- Requirements for indoor social gatherings. If you are considering having guests gather inside your home, they must meet the quarantine requirements for your region’s current phase. This is a good idea for outdoor gatherings as well.
- Wash hands. If there is no access to a sink, provide hand sanitizer.
- Wear masks. Wear a face covering at all times. Have extra masks on hand if people forget.
- Kids and masks. Children under 2 should never wear a mask. When with people from outside their household, children 2 to 4 should wear face coverings with adult supervision, and children 5 and older are required to wear face coverings. (If you have a child with a pre-existing medical condition and have concerns about masks, consult your medical provider.)
- No sharing. Avoid potlucks, buffets or other shared food. Ask guests to bring their own cup, plates and utensils. Or, better yet, plan your small gathering between meals. And remember, don't share toys or other items, and avoid shared surfaces.
- Clean, clean, clean. Disinfect frequently used surfaces before, during and after the gathering.
- Avoid close contact. Smiles and air hugs only when with people you don't live with. The six-foot distance rule applies to kids from outside your household too. Again, smiles and air hugs only! And no sharing toys or snacks. This is hard, but prepare kids—and grandparents—ahead of time.
- Open windows. If your guests have met all requirements of the indoor gathering restrictions and you decide you must have an indoor gathering, keep windows open in rooms where people will gather to allow for proper ventilation. Ask guests to dress warmly!
- Wash hands (again). Wash for 20 seconds with soap and water.
- Sanitize. Clean all surfaces that may have been touched by guests such as tabletops, counters, doorknobs and bathroom fixtures, with soap and water first, and then a disinfecting agent.
- Watch for symptoms. Alert others at the gathering if there’s a positive test among anyone in attendance. Learn more about what to do if you’ve been exposed.

- Parent and student conferences will be held September 1st thru 3rd to meet teachers and review details of the Distanced Learning Plan.
- All students will be issued a Chromebook if needed.
- The district will work to provide internet service to families in need.
- The AMHS student schedule will closely follow an in person model. The Elementary weekly schedule will be reviewed at conferences.
- At least weekly verbal contact will be made with each student.
- Student attendance is online and will be taken daily as is required by the State.
- We will use Google Classroom, Class Dojo and Zoom networking as the consistent online learning platforms for parent communications and K-12 student assignments.
- AMHS has adopted Illustrated Math and the Elementary continues to use Ready Math to provide additional resources.
- Students will receive a combination of scheduled real-time and recorded instruction. In addition, teachers will establish office hours for students needing to check-in or to receive individual support.
- Student assignments and test will count towards their final grade.
- Students with an Individual Education Plan will be contacted by their case manager/teacher.
- Students will have the option of participating in after school activities and sports when and if they become available.

To help answer some of the most commonly asked questions regarding the start up of the new school year we have put together a list of FAQ's which you can find by clicking on the link above.
Sincerely,
James L. Forrest

Subject: School Buildings Closed for the Remainder of 2019-2020 School Year
April 10, 2020
Dear Families,
Governor Inslee has made the decision to keep school buildings closed for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year. This extended closure is an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19 and keep our community safe and healthy.
Therefore, all school buildings in the Adna District will remain closed to the general public; however, the Adna School District will still provide continued learning opportunities.
We understand that the closure of our school buildings presents many challenges for students and families. It also raises many questions. The information outlined below is what we know now. We will continue to share further guidance as decisions are made and as information becomes available.
Now that we know we will be on continuous learning for the rest of the year, I want to reiterate our commitment and expectations moving forward.
- Continued Learning: Please check the district website for online assignments and/or communication from your school’s principal. Teachers will post to the district website weekly. Most elementary materials will be provided via bus route or the school drop off/ pick up location between 10:30am and 12:00pm each day. Secondary students without internet access will be provided paper assignments by contacting their building principal. Chromebooks are available for checkout by contacting your building principal(s). If you have questions, please contact your school or teacher. Email is best.
- High School Seniors: It is critical that seniors connect with their counselor and teachers to clearly understand the requirements to finish their classes, to earn credit, and to earn their diploma. The school year is not over. Adna High School will be in contact with seniors and their families about distribution of caps and gowns, about potential graduation activities, about the processes related to transcripts needed for applications to post-graduation education, and completion of the high school and beyond plan. Mr. Salme can be reached by email at [email protected]
- Nutrition Services: We will continue to provide meals to all students who need them during weekdays (currently, Monday – Friday from 10:30 to 12:00 pm) at the Middle/High School. Delivery service is available - a meal form (located on the website) must be completed.
- Kindergarten Screening: For children starting in 2020 Kindergarten Screening has been postponed. When the guidelines for social distancing have been changed, we will set a date for Kindergarten Screening. Children must be 5 years old before September 1, 2020 to attend kindergarten at Adna Elementary. Please contact Pam Beaulieu to give us the name and birthdate of your child. You may call and leave a message at 360-748-7029 or email [email protected]
If you have questions, again, please reach out (email is best) to your school or teacher(s). And, please continue to take good care of yourselves and your families. This is a difficult time for all of us, but we will get through it together.
Sincerely,
Jim Forrest
Superintendent
Today (April 6, 2020), Governor Inslee announced that school buildings will remain closed but learning will continue....
SUPERINTENDENT JIM FORREST'S MESSAGE APRIL 7, 2020
Adna School District will continue to provide our students with continuous learning via bus routes and the district website. Meals will continue to be provided at bus stops and the grab'n go location at the middle/high school.
Seniors: You will graduate and we will do everything possible to create a meaningful experience that honors your hard work and accomplishments. More specific information about the remainder of the school year will be shared the week of April 13, 2020.
SUPERINTENDENT CHRIS REYKDAL'S STATEMENT
OLYMPIA—April 6, 2020--In mid-March, Governor Inslee closed all public and private K–12 schools in our state through April 24. Today, he extended that directive and ordered all school buildings to close throughout the remainder of the 2019–20 school year.
We have more than 1.2 million students in our state who are impacted by this. Over 80,000 seniors may have attended their last in-person high school class without knowing it.
Just as our great-grandparents understood after two World Wars and the Great Depression, this generation will grow up knowing how to persevere in the face of challenges.
Especially during times of uncertainty, students need our support. They need grace, and structure, and routine. Even though the world may feel like it’s upside down, our students need to know that we will move forward.
These next two months will be tough. I won’t diminish that. However, learning must continue.
It will look different than we are used to. It will be more flexible, and it will evolve as we learn more and gain experience in the tools available to us.
Over the past three weeks since schools first closed, my office has worked tirelessly to provide guidance to school districts, keep the public informed, and problem-solve ways of ensuring all students in our state have access to high-quality continuous learning during this school closure.
This includes working with our congressional delegation to obtain waivers of some federal requirements in order to provide districts with much needed flexibility, as well as securing additional funding to support this continuous learning.
It includes providing school districts with a detailed framework for providing educational services during these unprecedented times, including tools and resources for overcoming inequities in access.
It also includes working with internet providers and software leaders to ensure every student and educator within the state has access to a device, home connectivity, and platforms for teaching and learning to take place.
This is not to say that moving traditional, in-person instruction to an online model is what is best for every student or every district. However, this is an unprecedented time.
This won’t be perfect. But we are a state full of dedicated, talented professionals who will continue running through walls to serve our students.
We will not let the fear of imperfection stand in our way.
SUPERINTENDENT JIM FORREST'S MESSAGE MARCH 30, 2020
As you know, Governor Inslee has enacted the Stay-home, Stay-healthy order that begin Thursday, March 26th. Since then the district has been adjusting accordingly and working to keep staff and students safe while providing essential services such as academics and meals.
Meal service will continue Monday through Friday at bus stops. Meals are free to any child 0 to 18 years old. The buses are running on a 2 hour late schedule and stop at all student pick up locations. Meals can also be picked up in front of the Middle-High School from 10:30am to 12:00pm. Meal services will continue during the traditional spring break week of April 6th through 10th. If you would like to be added to the meal list please sign up through the district website using the online Grab 'n Go Meal form or call the district office at 360-748-0362.
The second elementary course packet will be delivered April 1st. Information from Mrs Dallas was mailed on March 26th and posted on the district website. Middle-High School continuation of course work will be posted on the district website on Monday, March 30th. Mr. Nelson's letter is being emailed and also posted on the district website.
If your child needs a chromebook to complete their assignments please contact either of the school offices and arrangements will be made. You are also able to utilize both the parking lot at the elementary and the district office to access the district's guest wifi.
I want to thank all of our parents and students for their patience and understanding as we work through this unprecedented situation your health and safety is our priority.
Sincerely,
Jim Forrest, Superintendent

As directed by the Governor, we have been actively engaged in contingency planning for a closure.
Starting Monday, March 16, our schools will close through Friday, April 24, 2020. Public health
officials have advised us that a sustained closure can help slow the spread of COVID-19.
Beginning Monday, March 16, 2020, students will remain home. Staff can expect further guidance from administrators before the end of the day. All events including athletics, extra-curricular and youth sports are canceled effective immediately March 13, 2020.

regarding COVID-19. We are in constant communication with the Lewis County Health Department, the Governor’s Office and other area school districts and will continue to communicate any updated
information. We will inform all parents if we receive a recommendation from the Governor’s Office or the Lewis County Health Department to close school. In preparation, however, we do ask families, if you haven’t already, please prepare a plan for your children should schools need to close for any length of time.
If you are keeping your child home due to illness, symptoms, safety concerns, or health conditions, please contact your school attendance office as usual to excuse the absence.
Field trips, special events, after school activities/sports, and facility use are being evaluated on a case-by-case basis, depending on the type of activity, its location and the number of people in attendance. Special person lunch, middle school band festival, high school knowledge bowl and the social media parent meeting have been postponed.
Custodians continue to concentrate their work on daily sanitation of “high-touch” areas such as table tops, door knobs, light switches, etc. Buses are being sanitized after each route.
As a reminder, here are recommended health tips:
The Washington State Department of Health published an updated “What to do if you have symptoms of COVID-19 and have not been around anyone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19” document (revised date 3/5/20).
Be assured that we will continue to monitor and assess the information that is changing daily (if not
hourly).
ASD will be providing free Grab ‘n Go meals during the extended school closure. Breakfast & lunch will be served together in a single bag to anyone 18 and under beginning March 18 thru April 24 (M-F). Distribution will be provided on our district bus routes following a 2 hour late start schedule. You will also be able to pick up meals at the main entrance of the middle/high school from 10:30 – Noon. We will continue to monitor demand for this program throughout the closure and make adjustments as necessary.
EMERGENCY CLOSURE FOLLOWUP – 3/14/20, 10:00 AM
This is the Adna School District. Schools are closed until April 24. We are currently in the process of developing district plans to support students with non-educational services including meal pick up and drop off. Further communication regarding these services will be available Monday morning in our offices and on our website.
Our school offices will be open Monday, March 16 from 9:00-1:00 to allow pick of student belongings.
We recognize that this disruption in our normal school year has an impact on our students, our families and our staff. We know that this exceptional moment has prompted lots of conversation and questions which we will address in the coming days.
We want to express our appreciation for the patience of the ASD community as we work through the daily challenges COVID-19 has presented to all of us.
STATE MANDATED CLOSER – 3/13/20, 1:30 PM
Adna Families:
As you know, we are facing an unprecedented public health crisis in our state and world.
We have kept our schools operating normally as recommended by state and local public health authorities. We know that in addition to education, schools provide vital support to our communities and that closure will have a major impact on our families.
We wanted to get the message about school closure out to you as soon as possible. We are currently in the process of developing district plans to support students with non-educational services as requested by the Governor and OSPI. Further communication regarding these services will be forthcoming.
